EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

 

 

Supervised by: Public Works Supervisor and Public Services Director

Supervises: N/A

 

 

Position Summary:

Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks and general construction and maintenance on the City’s full range of infrastructure including building, public streets, water, storm drainage system, parks, grounds, cemetery systems, vehicles, and building and facilities.

 

 

Essential Job Functions:

An employee in this position is required to perform the following essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation. These examples are not intended to be an exhaustive list of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform.

 

1. Performs routine inspection, preventative and routine maintenance, and minor repairs on assigned equipment, including fueling, lubricating, and cleaning machinery to ensure proper operation. Refers defects and/or major repairs to supervisor.

 

2. Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies.

 

3. Operates trucks and road construction or power equipment, including mechanized broom, backhoe, dump truck, snowplow, trench digger, bucket loader, and bucket truck for construction and maintenance of streets, cemeteries, and parks.

 

4. Operates jackhammers, mowers, and other small equipment and tools to maintain street and utility systems.

 

5. Sweeps, scrapes, washes, paints, and repairs or replaces park tables and slabs. Inspects, washes, and performs routine maintenance on park facilities.

 

6. Performs minor, semi-skilled building maintenance, including painting, plumbing, masonry, welding, carpentry, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trades work. Performs a variety of general cleaning activities of equipment and buildings.

 

7. Assists in the maintenance of outdoor facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage and foundation work, roadside cleanup, and weed eradication.

 

8. Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including but not limited to pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pip repair, laying and backfilling, water main repair, hydrant repair, water meter reading and maintenance.

 

9. Assists in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices, including street signs and guardrail maintenance.

 

10. Controls traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas.

11. Documents results of preventative maintenance and other work in established logs.

 

12. Performs related work as required.

 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:

Requirements include the following:

 

· A high school diploma or GED is required.

 

· Four or more years of on-the-job experience necessary in order to become familiar with equipment, learn preventative maintenance/installation procedures, and to develop the skills necessary to assist in performing mechanical repairs/installations.

 

· A valid Michigan Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with the designations appropriate for the City’s fleet, a satisfactory driving record, and the ability to maintain one throughout employment are required.

 

· Knowledge of safe work practices, security standards and policies of the City.

 

· Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.

 

· Mechanical aptitude and the ability to diagnose and solve mechanical, electrical, and plumbing problems.

 

· Skill in the use of public works vehicles, equipment, tools, and materials, including heavy equipment, to a high degree of difficulty.

 

· Skill in reading grade stakes, blue prints, and specifications in order to perform required work.

 

· Ability to perform a variety of heavy manual, construction, maintenance and repair tasks involving carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, masonry, and other related skills for extended periods of time.

 

· Ability to read and write in order to understand equipment operating instructions and maintain logs and records of work performed related to routine maintenance, installation and repairs.

 

· Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail especially when performing safety sensitive tasks, completing preventative maintenance, making repairs, operating motor vehicles and mechanical equipment, and maintaining required logs.

 

· Ability to obtain Michigan Water Distribution License at the level appropriate for the City’s water system if needed.

 

· Ability to effectively communicate ideas and concepts orally and in writing.

 

· Ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information with complete discretion.

 

· Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness when dealing with the public, other employees, City officials and administrators, project contractors, and other professional contacts.

An employee in this position spends the majority of their time actively engaged in public works maintenance projects. Duties typically involve moderate to heavy physical activity and exertion, including heavy lifting. An employee in this position is regularly assigned to work sites with treacherous terrain, fumes, dust, chemicals or other hazardous materials, loud machinery and equipment and other dangers associated with facilities and public works maintenance activities.

 

An employee in this position must have the strength, stamina and physical coordination required to participate in heavy physical labor as lifting extremely heavy items and walking for extended periods. Further, heavy physical labor is performed in every type of weather condition, including extremely adverse weather conditions, extreme heat and severe cold weather. This position occasionally must work within the confined space of an excavated site or trench, and is required to have the vision capabilities and manual dexterity needed to operate all assigned vehicles and equipment.
