About the Thomas Jefferson Foundation The Thomas Jefferson Foundation has a twofold mission of preservation and education, and was incorporated in 1923 to preserve Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, in Charlottesville, Virginia. Today, the Foundation seeks to bring history forward into national and global dialogues by engaging audiences with Jefferson's world and ideas, and sharing the history of everyone, enslaved and free, who lived and labored at Monticello. Monticello is recognized as a National Historic Landmark, a United Nations World Heritage Site and a Site of Conscience. Archaeological Analyst (Temporary) This assignment is expected to last 12 months, with the possibility of a 6 to 12-month extension. This assignment and any relevant work are contingent upon funding. Purpose: To generate high-quality digital data on archaeological artifacts, excavation contexts, and site plans, with the use of detailed classification, measurement, digitizing, and coding protocols developed by the Monticello Archaeology Lab and the Digital Archaeological Archive of Comparative Slavery (DAACS). We will look to you to: Classify and measure, according to DAACS protocols, artifacts from archaeological excavations at Monticello and elsewhere. Enter the resulting data into the DAACS relational database. Analyze paper archaeological context records, section drawings, and site plans to extract key information for inclusion in the database. Use MicroStation and Illustrator to digitize archaeological site plans and context labels to a common symbology and level organization. Use R, ArchEd, and Illustrator to develop Harris Matrices. Create digital artifact images, with links to artifact records in the database. Use and appropriately modify SQL, SAS and R code to do basic analysis DAACS data. Teach DAACS cataloging protocols to students, fellows, and new staff. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Mastery of DAACS protocols and data structures for artifacts and context data and their instantiation in the DAACS database. Expertise the material culture of the early-modern Atlantic world, especially ceramics. Basic understanding of stratigraphy, soils, sediments, archaeological survey and excavation techniques. Knowledge of current scholarly literature in historical archaeology. Ability to work with code in SQL and SAS or R for basic archaeological data analysis. Proficiency with MicroStation and Illustrator for the creation and presentation of archaeological plans, sections, and maps. Ability to use scanners, digital cameras, and image processing software. Physical Demands and Work Considerations This position requires the ability to perform archaeological fieldwork, including both survey and excavation, under physically demanding conditions, including temperature extremes. Travel to make presentations at professional conferences is expected. Travel abroad and within the United States is expected for archaeological research and collections transport. Such travel may exceed 3-4 weeks away from Charlottesville. Education Bachelor’s degree in anthropology or related discipline, preferably with a concentration in archaeology, master's degree preferred. A minimum of two years’ experience in archaeological research.
